Daewoo was hit by a crippling blow during the Asian financial crisis of 1997, a blow that eventually lead to the company bought by General Motors in 2001 to form GM Daewoo. In 2004, General Motors removed Daewoo from Australia and New Zealand due to irreparable damage to the brand.

Following this move, General Motors went on to rebrand Daewoo; in Europe all models took the Chevrolet name while in South Africa, the Middle East and Thailand the cars were already being sold under the Chevrolet badge. In Australia and New Zealand the cars were sold under the brand Holden. The only countries still to use the Daewoo name are Vietnam and South Korea.
