The A3 is the most popular premium compact car, despite the introduction of the 1-Series Beemer and the Volvo C30. It goes without saying that, competing with cars of this class, build quality has to be excellent.
The most important seat in the car provides a good position from which to drive and is surrounded by good quality trim and controls. Like other premium cars, the range of equipment is good at the high-spec end, but a little restricted on the entry-level variants. Room in the rear can appear to be a little limited, especially if a dark interior colour is chosen.
A range of five petrol and three diesel engines provide the power. Although the 1.6ltr petrol engine is merely adequate, other engines offer a far better experience, the 1.8T FSI in particular having strong mid-range acceleration and maximum pull over a wide rev band (1500rpm-4200rpm). The smallest diesel, the 1.9TDI and the 2.0TDI both offer good performance. Top of the range is a 3.2-litre V6, which is quick, but requires a full wallet to keep it going for long. Transmission comes in either five- or six-speed manuals or the S-tronic double-shift box, which is a flash name for a semi-automatic.
Steering can be a little aloof, but otherwise the A3 is a good driver's car. The high-end variants with 4-wheel drive are particularly exciting from the driver's point of view. The safety rating is good at four-star, but other manufacturers have managed better in this class.
Economy is average, insurance between groups 11 and 18 and parts and servicing are on the expensive side.
