The Audi A8 is a large luxury car. And for those buying second hand, the fact that it is not up there quite with the corresponding BMWs and Mercedes is a major benefit. However, things are changing and people are becoming more aware of it.

The monster is powered by a range of big lumps from a 3.2ltr V6 petrol to a 3.7ltr and 4.2ltr V8s. The direct-injection 4.2 ltr FSI has lower emissions. There are also 6.0 ltr W12, 4.2 ltr V8 and 3.0ltr diesels. Most models have four-wheel drive through a six-speed automatic gearbox.

Suspension is provided by an air system and gives excellent control. Although the steering is Audi's electric power steering and is good around town, it is unfeeling at speed.

Driving position is good due to the infinite amount of adjustment that can be made. The A8 has Audi's system of peripheral control with a knurled wheel in the centre console to adjust suspension, Sat Nav etc.

There is acres of space for five large adults and all their luggage. Consumption figures are not good, but anyone who complains can't afford the car in the first place - nor the insurance at groups 17-20.
