Audi's big beast off-roader that goes head to head with the Porsche Cayenne, Volvo XC90, BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz ML. It is bigger and more powerful than any of them and also comes to the table bristling with even more features, despite the fact that not one of them could ever be described as under-equipped.
There have been criticisms about driving the Q7 and its size, but all big 4X4s are like driving a truck and anyone who wants to take the car to Asda's car park and not have to work at parking it should buy a Smart Car. Audi do offer a lot of features to help, however. For instance: front and rear cameras with a dash-mounted TV screen; a blind-spot warning system that lights a warning in the door mirror when anything is to the side and rear that might otherwise be missed by the driver.
The air suspension provides a good ride and is height-adjustable to help get the car over boulders, etc. It comes as a seven-seater as standard, but five and six-seat options are available offering each occupant even more space. Other comfort features include 4-zone climate control, full length glass roof and double-glazing.
Two power units are available: a 4.2ltr V8 petrol and a 3.0ltrV6 turbodiesel. Neither are sportscar fast, but pack power for what they are intended for.
Safety is well-catered for with sheer mass as first line of defence. Airbags abound and the standard electronic stability control has additional features such as rollover stabilisation program, which comes into play if the Q7 is in danger of toppling over, downhill speed control, which allows the driver to concentrate solely on steering. The adaptive cruise control system uses radar sensors to maintain a fixed distance from the car ahead and is able to brake to an absolute standstill, which many other units are unable to do. Insurance and running costs are obviously on the steep side.
