BMW's attempt at the hot hatch, the 1-Series is a gamble that some people will love and others hate. BMW has always used a traditional layout for their cars...big engine up front with the steering wheels, some nice stuff in the middle and the driving wheels at the back. More expensive than producing a front wheel drive car, but more balanced and you are not asking one element of the machine to do all the work. The hatch was born with front wheel drive because it takes up less space in the body of the car...you sort of have all the horses pulling a square metal box, so you can fit more in to a smaller space. Well, BMW have maintained their affection for rear-wheel drive even with this hatchback. And although it has produced the most balanced and drivable of the hatchbacks, it has also illustrated why it hasn't been done before. The hatchback was designed for a small family...mum, dad and a kid or two. Well, in the BMW 1-Series, mum and dad are fine...more than fine, in fact, especially if one of them is a serious driver...but the kids will have to be a twinkle in the eye if they are to fit into the back seats. And if they have more than a toothbrush to take with them there will be a need for a roof box. Great engines, not so nice interior, astronomical price and insurance groups 10 to 12, the 1-Series will find a particular market, but it wil not b a vast one.
