What can be said about the Beemer 5-series? For many years holding a unique position, which has only recently usurped by the smaller, more nimble and a whole lot cheaper 3-Series, the 5 still has a part to play in the bigger BMW picture. Not quite as big as the Mondeo, the 5-Series doesn't even bother with entry level power units now. Petrol engines start with a 2.5ltr and go up to two versions of the 3.0ltr. Diesels deign to start with a 2.0ltr, but then go immediately to three variants of the 3.0ltr engine.
Ride and road holding are excellent, even without paying out more for the sports suspension, which is a little too brutal for many tastes anyway. As in keeping with a luxury car, the 5-Series is quiet, with even the diesels producing no more than a sporty thrum when pushed. Stability and traction controls come as standard to ensure the power does what it is expected to do and electronic braking distribution helps bring the car back to a standstill even in the most trying of situations.
Quality is the word throughout, both with external build and internal trim. All materials look the business. Equipment is as it should be, with even head-up displays available for vital information. Insurance for this type of car comes in between 14 and 18, with the super sport models coming in at an expected 20.
