BMW's true 4X4 and with all the capabilities for off-roading. However, it must be hard to take something that has cost this much money and put it up against nature.[BD38]
Engines similar to the other big BMWs, with similar transmissions (six-speed manual and semi-automatics). This does mean that reliability is something of a given. All tried and trusted. Unlike the original attempt at the X5, BMW have now increased the size, to keep it away from little sister X3, and it now accommodates four big adults and their luggage easily. Trim is good and the range of standard equipment vast. However, there are still things like leather seats and sat-nav that BMW insist on charging for. The X5 is built in American and when Mercedes did this with the ML they found build problems. So far this doesn't appear to have happened for BMW.
Even with the 3.0ltr diesel engine, the X5 hits 60mph in a little over 8 seconds. Road and wind noise are negligible and the engine is so sweet, whatever the variant, that you would be hard pressed to know if it were the diesel or the petrol version.
