A true sportscar. Well it is now. The BMW Z4 takes over from the Z3, which didn't quite do what it had promised. The Z4 does, with an increased size, increased power, increased equipment...well, you name it. But now it is a true sport-car with the exhilaration that mark implies.
Power plants start at 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.2ltr. Gearboxes are manual six-speed although an automatic is available.
Internally, there is a full range of adjustments for the driver and a number of options of seat types, including a sport seat that hugs you tight and stops you flying around the place when hitting the country roads with your foot down.
The roof is a metal convertible type and is well-engineered. It is also quick, rising or falling in 8 seconds.
Much equipment is standard, with the list of what isn't on the expensive side. But things like brake pretensioning (it starts to put the brakes on before you know there is some thing to brake for), brake drying and hill start assistance are.
Running costs are reasonable, with the 2.0ltr returning nearly 38 mpg. As the car uses parts from other BMW models, the reliability should be good. Insurance is between 17 and 20
