It may look like a van, but it isn't, as anyone brave enough to take the car for a test drive will confirm. What it is, is a highly practical family car that can be used for almost anything, from the school run to carting the rubbish to the tip.
The Berlingo comes with a choice of four engines: a 75bhp 1.4ltr and 16v 1.6ltr petrol engines and a 1.6ltr turbodiesels producing either 75bhp or 92bhp. And although it looks like a builder's truck, it drives incredibly well, despite a tendency to roll a bit on corners. Noise is limited, but there is a little wind noise at speed.
Economy is good, particularly with the diesel block and insurance is either group 4 or 5. Build is good, although the interior looks cheap and there is a perception of it not being particularly hardwearing, although that is erroneous.
From the driver's point of view, the driving position is a little upright, but that and the area of glass give a superb view of the surroundings. Switches are all placed logically.
Even with five adults installed, the luggage area is huge and there are door pockets, nets, tie-down hooks and overhead lockers for all the knick knacks a family takes with it. Basic equipment is a little basic, but things like air conditioning and stability control are chargeable extras.
