Fiat is aiming the Croma well and truly at the Mondeo/Vectra market and has used features from the MPV market to provide a huge amount of luggage space, headroom and legroom.
Power comes from one petrol engine -- a 147bhp 2.2-litre - and three diesels -- 1.9ltr with 120bhp or 150bhp, and a 2.4ltr producing 200bhp - a range of powers to satisfy all needs. Fiat have employed a former Volkswagen and BMW manager to keep quality high and it appears to have paid off with the solid feel and quality appearance of the interior.
There is plenty of storage space and the seats can be configured to accommodate a variety of different Combinations of people and baggage. For the family, there are loads of little cubbie-holes to put thing in.
The Croma is easy to drive and as a cruiser copes well. But steering is light and the suspension soft, so it wallows a bit on lesser roads. Safety is good, with the car attaining a 5-star rating. ABS and brakeforce distribution come as standard and stability control comes on the higher spec variants.
Running costs are average, with Fiat providing a pre-pay type service agreement. Insurance is surprisingly high in groups 11 to 15.
