A uniquely designed people carrier, the Doblo is powered by a small range of engines including a 77bhp 1.4-litre petrol engine, an 85bhp 1.3 turbodiesel and a 1.9 diesel producing either 105 or 120bhp. The smaller engines rev well and produce a sprightly ride, almost negating the need for the lower powered 1.9 diesel.
The height and fairly high centre of gravity makes the body roll, which can be disconcerting doing things like changing lanes at high speed.
Engine and road noise is kept to a minimum, but the shape leads to a fair amount of wind noise, even at moderate speeds.
There is a feel of van about the car, but even though the interior is far from luscious, there is a sense of longevity about the materials used. There are few extras, either -safety features come in the shape of two airbags and ABS brakes, while security isn't helped with the lack of alarm and deadlocks.
The driving position is good and all the controls nicely to hand, but the seats could be more supportive. Five adults fit easily with plenty of space top and bottom. Luggage space is good and made cavernous with the rear seats folded.
