Small car, big space...and advertised by George Clooney when it first appeared. The Idea was designed to attack the small MPV market and provides plenty of space, both head and leg, and offers comfort in the back by having the seat reclinable. It also slides, folds and otherwise moves out of the way to provide a larger space for luggage.
Two engines are available to push this car along: a 1.4ltr petrol and a 1.3ltr diesel. The ride is a little soft and bumpy roads can knock the car off course a little. There is a fair amount of body roll on corners and the steering doesn't give enough feel to make you feel confident at these moments.
Internally, the decor is light, but the quality of build isn't that of rivals like the Vauxhall Meriva. Mechanically, many parts come from the Punto so have pedigree. The driving position is good with a steering wheel that adjusts two ways and a seat that has a great deal of vertical movement. The gear lever is nicely placed on the dash. Safety isn't too bad, with the car achieving 3 stars out of 5, so rivals do better.
Running costs are as good as any with consumption a reasonable 43mpg for the petrol and 55mpg for the diesel. Insurance is in groups 4-6.
Prices are competitive, although the Idea has the advantage of being better equipped than most.
