The Sedici is a collaboration between Fiat, who has no name for rugged off-roaders, and Suzuki, who have. Whether it is an attempt to ease Fiat into this profitable sector of the market or not is neither here nor there. What is important is whether or not this is a car worth considering when looking for a small family hatchback with a bit of a difference.
Thankfully, the Japanese designed the running gear and the Italians the wrapping. Two engines are available, a 1.6ltr 16-valve petrol and a 1.9 multijet diesel. The diesel wins hands down with guts, economy and enjoyment factor.
Handling is excellent, despite the height of the car. The four-wheel drive automatically comes into play when wheel-spin is detected and this gives the car surprising off-road capabilities.
Economy is average, forty-odd to the gallon for the diesel, but the emissions are class-leading. Insurance groups are good for this type of vehicle.
Build is good, especially so for Fiat, and the interior materials seem rugged and durable. There is plenty of room for four, with lots of little cubbie-holes for storage, although the boot is small.
