One of the few cars to be designed in the States for sale around the world, the Ford Focus has remained almost unchanged since its inception. Because of this, the opposition have caught up and, in some cases, overtaken the Focus in terms of technology and specification. However, the car was good enough at the beginning to still be one Ford's best sellers.
The Focus comes in an unending range of internal specifications and a number of engine sizes: the 79bhp 1.4ltr, 99bhp and 113bhp 1.6ltr, a 122bhp 1.8ltr and 2.0ltr petrol plus a 1.6ltr, a 1.8ltr, and 2.0-litre turbodiesel.
At its best design-wise in the hatchback format, the Focus also comes in saloon and an estate. To appeal to Europe, the car has been designed with responsive handling and all flavours of Focus benefit from a practical interior combined with a surprising sportiness.
Unlike other Ford models, there have been questions over build quality and finish and it is advisable for those buying secondhand to check thoroughly. Insurance groups range category 5 to 17 (for the ST).
