The alternative to the Galaxy, the S Max is a driver's car as well as a load carrier. Excellent steering and grip make the car a joy to drive on windy roads with the power and flexibility of the engines a great bonus for motorways. More a car than a minibus, the S Max boasts a small range of good engines, with the diesel versions particularly good for power and economy. Not that the S Max can be classified as an economic car. It isn't, although the diesels can return a reasonable consumption in the late 40s.
Comfort is good, although the seats can be a bit wearing for adults on long distances. Despite large glass areas, there is little noise from road or wind and with the 2.5ltr version even the engine is all but silent. The S Max is larger than most of its competitors, with acres of space when used as a 5-seater and even room for a couple of bags as a 7-seater.
The S Max has the usual selection of airbags, including the one to protect the driver's knees. The usual anti-lock brakes, EPS and immobilizers come as standard.
Insurance groups range from 10 to 14 (the 2.5ltr Zetec and Titanium).
