The Honda Civic has long had a split personality; it has been a favourite with the younger element, who seem to enjoy the fact that the car is infinitely modifiable, but it also attracts the older members of our society.
Power comes from three petrol engines and a diesel: the 1.4ltr, 1.8ltr and 2.0ltr in petrol, and the 2.2ltr diesel. Although not earth shattering in its performance in any of its forms, the engines are all eager, even at the bottom end. But the ride can be harsh that every pothole gets pounded into the cabin and at higher speeds the car can feel as though it is being knocked off course.
Both wind and road noise can be intrusive, but engines are nicely buffered.
Economy figures are good no matter which engine you choose and emission figures are excellent, but insurance groups are high for this type of car (groups 7-17).
Build is good, but some materials used inside are a little light. The usual safety features appear in the Civic.
Dash and instrumentation look stylish and futuristic, but can reflect on the screen at night. Short drivers will also have trouble seeing the speedo over the steering wheel.
