Honda's two-seater roadster. Bred on the racetrack, the S2000 uses the DOHC VTEC 2.0ltr engine, which produces 240bhp, but max power only arrives at 8300rpm, which means the engine needs to be revved high to get the most of it. However, the engine is a good compromise, making around town driving a satisfying experience, but it isn't until you hit the 6000 rpm mark that you realize what this car can do.
Tight on cabin space, the car offers no adjustment in the driving position other than back and forth movement of the driver's seat. But it doesn't seem to matter. Interior trim has been designed to give a sporty feel with leather-trimmed steering wheel, alloy gear lever knob and drilled pedals. There is little in the way of driver aids other than anti-lock brakes and maybe a traction control would come in handy for new drivers with this sort of power under the control of their right foot.
The ride is firm, but the suspension absorbs potholes easily and is more forgiving on the limit than earlier models. There is a lot of noise from the exhaust, but this is why you buy a car like this. With the hood down, the S2000 is a traditional wind-in-the-hair type of ride, with little done to reduce the wind buffeting the occupants.
Build quality is excellent. The emissions from these engines are low, but the consumption is 30mpg at the most and insurance is group 19.
