No one thought that Jaguar would ever come close to producing another E-Type and maybe they haven't, quite. But they have made a great effort towards it with the XK - aided by the guy who designed the Aston Martin V8 Vantage. And there is a point here...do those who buy the XK think they have bought a cut down Aston and do those who buy the Aston think they have spent an enormous amount of money for a Aston name plate?
This is one pretty car that battles well with the BMW 6-Series and the Mercedes SL. And wins on many counts. It is fun for a start. Like the E-Type...a sports car in a different league. It is never going to be competition to the likes of the Porsche (any Porsche) or even the fun element of the MR5, but it is a seriously potent car that uses traditional technology to get the 300bhp from the 4.2-litre V8 to the road. There is also a 420bhp supercharged XKR version. Both versions use a six-speed automatic gearbox with three shift program options.
Built quality is good, especially inside, where the wood and leather are of very high quality and everything seems...well, quality.
The XK is an expensive car and more expensive to run. Company taxes are very high and bought privately would cost a lot in depreciation.
Although advertised as a 2+2, the rear seat is about big enough to put your wallet or handbag on. Boot space is not bad especially with the coupe, which has a hatchback. There is a reasonable amount of storage inside although something on the transmission tunnel would have been handy.
Insurance is unsurprisingly in group 20.
