AN MPV with a difference...Mazda's 5 may look a little bland from today's point of view, but it is a car with something to offer. For a start, it is one of the best large MPV-type vehicles to drive. Surprising for its size. But the rigid chassis, the steering and drive chain provide an impressive grip and feel around corners.
The 5 is available with two petrol and two diesel engines: 1.8ltr and 2.0ltr petrol and two 2.0ltr diesels tuned to produce either 108 or 141bhp. The 1.8ltr petrol engine is a little underpowered, especially if the car is regularly full, but none of the others need to be pushed to provide ample power. The diesels return well over 40mpg and the emissions are low.
As far as build is concerned, Mazda have a good reputation for quality and there is no difference here, although the interior materials don't look quite as good as various rivals.
The dash looks good with dials and instruments where you want them. The steering wheel adjusts both for height and rake as does the driving seat, so finding a comfortable position is easy.
