The 6 is undoubtedly Mazda's strongest offering other than the MX 5. There has been a recent update of the car, but unless you really know what you are looking at you wouldn't notice. There are three petrol engines available and two turbodiesels: 1.8ltr, 2.0ltr and 2.3ltr units producing 118bhp, 145bhp and 164bhp respectively and two 2.0ltr turbodiesels developing 119bhp or 141bhp. There's also an MPS performance version.
The ride is firm, but not uncomfortable and the taught steering and controls make it a fun car to drive. The engines, especially the 1.8ltr, need to be worked hard and reward the effort with a fair bit of noise.
The overall build is excellent, as is normally the case with Mazda, and the interior is far above average for Japanese cars, with a soft feel dash more commonly found in European cars. This is a true family sized car, with plenty of space for adults front and rear. The boot is a good size and the rear seats can be folded right out of the way for acres of luggage space
Safety is good, although stability control is only a standard on the highest spec'd version, but the full range of airbags and anti-lock brakes are.
