The RX 8 is unique. It is certainly the only car in production to retain the rotary engine, something that began life being called a Wankel engine...well, it was soon only Mazda that kept it going in the RX 7 sports car and even they thought about dropping it altogether at that car's demise. However, the engineers at Mazda have done a good job at resolving most of the major problems associated with rotary engines then decided to try and fit it into a car that was more practical than a sport scar. Enter the RX 8 - a four door, four-seat car with plenty of room and plenty of power.
To start with the four doors, to keep the car looking sporty with the coupe look, the two rear doors are hinged at the rear and there is no door pillar. There is no handle either because the rear doors can't be opened unless the front ones are. These doors actually provide acres of room to access the rear seats and to get things like kid's seat belts fastened.
Keeping with the sporty spirit, the RX 8 is perfectly balanced front to rear, thanks to positioning the rotary engine in a mid rather than front position.
Two versions are available, a 192bhp with a five-speed box and a 240bhp with a six speed box. The stronger engine does 0-60 in 6 seconds and reaches 150mph. Consumption is around 25mpg and insurance in groups 15 and 16.
