When the A-Class was introduced in 1996 it was almost a disaster for Mercedes and lead to the term 'elk test' being used by almost every motor journalist. But the manufacturer never gave up and gradually improved the car until now we have a vehicle that is a credit to the Mercedes marque.
Although the shape is obviously A-Class, it has been refined in almost every detail. It is larger, more aerodynamic and well, attractive. Inside is pure Mercedes, with good quality materials and that look of opulence.
Where the original A-Class dodged obstacles by rolling over onto its back and begging, the new one is stacked to the gills with technology that reduces any roll, despite the height of the car.
Engines include: a 2ltr diesel producing either 82bhp or 140bhp and 1.4ltr, 1.7ltr, 1.8ltr and 2.0ltr petrol engines. A hot 2-litre turbocharged engine is available in the range-topping A200 Turbo. Power is transferred through 5 and 6-speed manual boxes, depending on the engine, or a continuous speed automatic box.
Safety is excellent, with a full five stars achieved in the crash tests and build and reliability are true Mercedes. Also true to Mercedes is the lack of 'extras', which is supposed to allow owners to build their own car by selecting the bits they really want.
Running costs start with a high initial price, but economy is good at between 45 and 50 to the gallon and insurance between groups 5 and 7.
