Not a car for those looking to make the pennies go further. This is Mercedes at its best, a car to get some important people from A to B in the most cosseted way possible. Luxury epitomized, the CL-Class has an entry level that will give you loose change out of £80000. Top of the range will set you back nearly £110000.
Three variants are offered: CL 500 powered by a new 5.5 litre V8 engine, the CL 600 by a bi-turbo V12 and the new CL 63 AMG by the worlds most powerful naturally aspirated V8 production engine.
Not that you will have to worry about optional extras. The price tag includes almost all there is to have. Not just leather seats, not just heated leather seats, but heated leather seats with air cushions and a massage system!
Passengers are further cocooned with Active Body Control, which prevents any body roll. There is also a new system called PreSafe, which knows when you are in danger of a knock and moves the passenger seat into the safest position, primes the airbags, closes side window and sunroof and inflates the air cushions in the seats -it then uses radar to control the speed of the car, bringing it a halt if necessary and setting it off again as soon as the driver touches the accelerator.
Drivers are also aided by Advanced parking Guidance, which can tell if a parking space is big enough for the car and guides the driver into it using a screen display.
Running costs are obviously high, but that said, Mercedes have managed to get these engines to return up to 23mpg. Insurance couldn't get any higher at Group 20.
