The Premium Coupe, the CLK-Class has few competitors, with BMW providing a harder, sportier car against this luxury mode of transport from Mercedes. Powered by a supercharged 200 "Kompressor" a few V6 petrol variants, 500 V8 (with AMG badge) or two excellent diesels (220 CDI or 320 CDI V6), the CLK can never be called underpowered. However, the top-engined machines are seriously quick.
As a coupe, it is questionable whether the rear seats are intended for more than occasional use anyway, and although the CLK can seat two adults in the back, it wouldn't be for long journeys and they would have to show an amount of physical dexterity to get in there as access to the back can also be a little awkward. The boot space is adequate. Driving position is good and the overall feel is one of contained luxury. Controls are good as usual, although all those extras come with an extra price tag. Steering is a little heavier than other models, so parking can be a chore, but on the road there is plenty of feel to give the driver confidence on winding roads. The CLK comes with the COMAND system to operate all the peripherals and this can sometimes be confusing.
Safety and security is average, but as this is a sought after car amongst thieves, the keyless option is tempting.
Running costs are not cheap, but you wouldn't expect any different from such a luxury car. Insurance groups 15 to 20.
