There is a type of car that has a market that isn't a rugged 4X4, but is more than an estate. Some manufacturers call them MPV, others a Grand Tourer. However, it is not an easy market to fill and Mercedes haven't quite got it right with the R-Class, which is too expensive and impractical to battle in the marketplace to any great degree.
Based on the same base as the M- and GL-Series, it hasn't the capacity of a people carrier nor the practicalities of a proper 4X4.
It has a full range of engines from 190bhp diesel to a 510bhp 6.2-litre petrol V8. There are also 3.5-litre V6 and 5.0-litre V8 petrol engines, and a more powerful 3.0 V6 diesel
Ride is excellent except for a slight roll because of the car's height, but Mercedes' body control is better than most.
Trim is well finished and the cockpit features a lot of components that are similar to the rest of the Mercedes range. The short wheelbase version really lacks space in the back. Legroom in the back is a bit tight as well.
Equipment is nothing more than average, which, with the car's price tag, is a little disappointing. Insurance is between 18 and 20.
