The SL started in the 50s with the Gullwing. Since then each refreshed model has stayed around a while before being replaced. This philosophy is changing and the latest version has a limited shelf life of seven and a half years. A reason for this is the growing number of rivals entering the field. To counter this, Mercedes have filled the present SL-Class with a full complement of technology.
Powered by a range of engines from an entry level 3.7-litre, 245bhp V6 engine through a 306bhp, 5.0-litre, V8, a 476bhp, 5.5-litre AMG version to a 6.0-litre, twin-turbo V12. Gearboxes are either a sequential-shift semi-automatic transmission or a normal automatic. No matter which engine you decide upon, the performance is good, but the driving experience is better as you go up. Seating and steering are fully adjustable and provide an excellent driving position, which makes winding roads an exhilarating drive. While driving, the passengers are protected by a range of features including a pop-up roll-over bar, AS anti-lock brakes, Brake Assist, traction control, anti-skid control, and new technologies like brake-by-wire and Active Body Control suspension.
Interiors are up to their old standards and the build is better than average. Insurance is 18 to 20.
