Mercedes' full size people carrier popular with, among others, the high-end mini-bus companies. Based on the Mercedes van, it is difficult to ignore the vehicle's origins, although Mercedes have done much to mask it. Engine choice is limited: 2.0ltr, 2.2ltr and 3.0ltr V6 diesels and a 3.5-litre V6 petrol. The smaller engines are too small, the larger ones expensive to run.
The standard van suspension never lets you forget that it was deigned to carry goods around, but the Mercedes air suspension option makes an excellent attempt at smoothing the road and improving handling. Anyone used to a Mercedes will be disappointed in the trim and equipment and general 'feel' of the cabin, but it is better than average. However, the utilitarian background comes in handy providing a sense of solidity and a perception of ruggedness.
Initial costs are expensive compared with rivals and running costs are fairly high with residual values the lowest for any Mercedes. Company tax is in the highest bracket.
The Viano comes with anti-lock brakes, brake assist and brake force distribution. There is also stability and traction controls to give the driver confidence.
