Mitsubishi's true 4X4 and a cheaper alternative to the premium marques. It comes with one engine, a 3.2ltr 4-cylinder diesel, which certainly isn't over-powered especially considering the size of this car.
Again as in a number of these capable off-roaders, the road ride suffers. It rolls around bends, the steering isn't particularly accurate and the surface of the road is transmitted into the cabin. It is also a noisy car with engine, wind and road all vying for attention.
And running the beast is no easy matter with fuel consumption high, C02 emissions gargantuan and insurance in the 14 - 16 range.
The Shogun has been chosen to undergo events such as the Dakar rally, so reliability is obviously good. Inside, however, the materials used don't appear to have the quality of those of the premium manufacturers.
Although the car is huge, there isn't as much space as you would expect. The high position of the passenger seats means that the central passengers at least are in a fairly uncomfortable position. The rearmost seats are better and the luggage space is vast with them folded.
As with most Japanese cars, you get a wide range of extras even on the base models.
