The Patrol is Nissan's 4X4 beast. However, it only comes with one engine and that isn't the best engine in the world. Although the 3.0ltr diesel lump can drag 3.5 tons, it isn't great on the road pushing the car to 60 taking around 15 seconds. The ride is also a problem on road, as the car is designed for off-road use and doesn't compromise. The car wallows around corners and its vague steering and long suspension transmits rough surfaces through to the cabin.
On the face of it, the sheer space, equipment and off-road ability seems to make the Patrol a good buy. Group 14 insurance is fair and the residual values are respectable, but consumption is only 26mpg, which is bettered by several rivals, as are its carbon dioxide emissions for company car tax and cost-per-mile figures.
Inside, you know that this is a workhorse of a vehicle, but it isn't bare metal and plastic seats. There is sufficient comfort from the adjustable seat and the controls are well thought-out and sturdy. There is plenty of room for five (there is a seven seater version as well), along with their luggage.
All expected equipment is available, although many of the technological features of other brands are not. Those who watch the news may have noticed that they are often looking at fleets of these cars in such places as deserts and jungles with red crosses or UN written all over them. This is not a coincidence.
