The 206 is assumed to be the replacement to the 205, but there are few similarities apart from the fact that both are small hatchbacks. And there is a GTi version of the 206 with a 2.0ltr engine, of course.
Space is good, with rear passenger comfort extremely good for such a small car. However, it is not easy to find a good driving position and the basic models provide a Spartan environment to say the least.
Wind noise is louder than you would expect and the tyres make a lot of noise on some types of road surface.
Engines come in 1.1, 1.4, 1.6 and 2 ltr petrol engines and 1.4, 1.9 and 2.0ltr diesels, so there is something for everyone (the diesels are excellent, but the 1.9 is old technology and sounds like it). All power units provide a nippy performance and combined with the compact size make the car ideal for a small family, especially with the interior space and the generous capacity of the boot.
Safety and security are good, with a 4-star rating. Service intervals are long, insurance low (groups 3 to 8, but the sportier models can range from 14 to 17) and engines frugal, so running costs are low.
