Most Peugeot cars have great driving positions and are fun to drive. The 407 is an exception. It will be a strange shape of person to find the driving position comfortable. And once in, the drive is not great either with the steering and suspension giving a stiff and wooden feel, especially at low speeds.
Power units range widely from a 1.6-litre turbodiesel developing 110bhp through a 2.0-litre, and a 2.2 to a twin-turbo 2.7 developing 205bhp. Petrol-wise, there is a 2.2ltr a 1.8, and a 2.0 all being topped by a 3.0ltr. None of them are intrusive when it comes to noise and neither is noise from the road nor wind.
The 1.6 turbodiesel is impressively economic with consumption of around 50mpg. At the other end of the scale, the 3.0ltr V6 is thirsty to say the least.
Quality, like most of the Peugeot range, is good and should take hard treatment. Safety and security equipment is also reasonable with stability control standard across the range.
Controls are good except for the central panel, which is festooned with buttons that are confusing on the move.
Space is reasonable, considering that the car is a saloon and not a hatch. Head room in the rear is tight, but legroom is plentiful. Boot is ok. Insurance groups range from 7 to 17.
