The Boxster was seen at first to be a cheap Porsche and was given short shrift by those who thought Porsche sports cars were an elite drive. But others saw it as something different. This was a new sports car from the company that produced probably the best sports car in the world. They had to know what they were doing, surely? Designed as a sports car from the bottom up, Porsche decided to put the horizontally opposed 6 cylinder engine low and in the middle of the car to get the balance of the car almost perfect. So instead of having driving errors punished with a pirouette into the hedgerow as was often the case with the super powerful 911, the Boxster forgave lapses in concentration.
The 2.7ltr 245bhp engine provides sizzling performance and combined with the slick gearbox, almost perfect steering and a wide track makes the handling incredibly impressive.
The car is surprisingly refined for something with such a performance. A new shaped roof and improved interior materials combine to keep noise down, even from the wind, which is some achievement.
Another benefit of the engine position is a practicality not seen in other two-seaters. A boot at the back and another in the front are more than adequate for most luggage. The only criticism is that there is little space for knick knacks in the cabin. Insurance groups 17 and 18.
