No one is going to forget the tele ads for the original Clio, what with the story of Nicole's love life doing much to sell the little hatchback to the world's male population. The Clio has superb grip and composure and with the refinement of the interior giving impeccable sound insulation, this is one highly effective cruiser.
High spec models provide a feeling of quality and style with soft materials and metal inserts in the interior, but the cheaper variants are not so equipped.
Another five-star winner in the crash tests, the Clio has anti-lock brakes as standard, cheap stability control across the range, and deadlocks and anti-drill locks to keep out the unwelcome visitor.
The driving position isn't as good as it could be, but with the keyless option, this is improved with the addition of reach adjustment to the steering column.
Cabin space is more than sufficient for four adult passengers with access good even in the three-door. Boot space is not bad, but there is a sill to get over to load it.
Insurance groups range from 2 to 6 with the higher powered versions moving up from 10 to 17 (the Williams)
