Remember the Renault 4 and the Citreon 2CV? Well, the Kangoo is the modern day equivalent, a car to live in, a car that is part of the family, not just a mode of transport. Derived from the Renault Van, the Kangoo is a five-seater with all the practicality of that utility vehicle. Five large, thick seats combine with the long-travel suspension to produce an extremely comfortable ride for all five passengers, although the high sides and the high centre of gravity tend to make the car feel a little unstable around corners. This is a perception as the car actually sticks well to the road.
The car is powered by two petrol engines, a 1.2ltr and a 1.6ltr 16v, and two 1.5ltr turbodiesels. All are highly economical, returning over 50mpg. Insurance is also low and maintenance is reasonable.
Although engine and wind noise have been kept down, there is a fair amount of road noise. The car's utilitarian background has given it a solid feel, although some of the trim is very basic and there is an amount of bare metal. That said, there is a good range of equipment and enough storage for anyone's needs.
Access to the interior is through sliding rear doors, which means that even tight parking spaces still allow the kids to be strapped into the back seats. There is a vast rear tailgate to gain access to the luggage area. Insurance groups 4 and 5.
