Toyota's full MPV, the Previa has had a facelift, although much of the changes are under the skin. For a start it is front-engined and front-wheel drive, as against the mid-engined layout of the original version, with its engine under the front seats.
This is one of the biggest of the MPVs and is able to take 8 passengers with reasonable ease. Access to the interior is through rear sliding doors on both sides of the car. Storage is ok, but there is no under-floor storage.
Power comes from a 2.4ltr petrol engine or a 2.0ltr turbodiesel. Although both are capable of powering the car, neither offers any excitement and can be considered nothing but adequate.
Build quality is good as is usual for Toyota, but some of the interior plastics my not be up to the hard work a car of this type is likely to have to undertake. Sound insulation is good.
Despite being a large and reasonably heavy car, the steering makes it feel light and with the good suspension makes the car easy to control. Visibility is good and the driver is presented with an excellently designed dashboard and controls.
Safety-wise, front airbags, anti-lock brakes and electronic brake force distribution are standard.
Insurance groups of 11-13 are good for a car of this size.
