The Prius is a hybrid...a Hybrid Synergy Drive...a combination of electric motor and petrol engine. Toyota are probably pleased that the stars and environmentalists have taken up the mantle and are buying this little hatchback because it is supposed to be good for the environment. As it is, the emissions and consumption can be matched by some of the latest diesels, but the technology is new and it will improve and already this is a fascinating car to own and drive.
For those living in or around London, it is good to know that the emissions are so low, the car is exempt from the congestion charge.
The car uses regenerative braking to generate power to charge the electric motor's batteries. Other than that, it is pretty similar to an ordinary petrol engine. Well, not completely, because when you start the Prius, there is nothing. It starts on the electric motor, so there is not indication of anything happening other than the dash coming to life. And moving off, the electric motor continues to be the source of power until you have reached 22 mph.
The gearbox is a continuously variable box so there are no jerks as it changes. Driven gently and the car is almost silent, however, if you try and push it, the gearbox keeps the revs up and it is a little noisy.
Interior quality is excellent and the dash futuristic. Plenty of space for a tall passenger to sit behind a tall driver. Insurance is group 7 or 8.
