The Yaris is Toyota's super-mini, but now it has been allowed to grow a little because of the introduction of the new Aygo.
In addition to the 3-cyl 1.0ltr engine, two more petrol engine are offered: a 1.3ltr, variably valve-timed motor from the previous Yaris, making 87bhp, and a 1.8ltr 131bhp engine offered in the flagship SR trim level only. A 1.4ltr D-4D turbodiesel completes the line-up, producing 88bhp. A choice of five-speed manual or clutchless sequential transmissions finishes the power train.
Finish is an improvement over the last model, but there are still some cheap plastics and the doors aren't as solid at they could be.
The Yaris is never going to be an exciting drive, although the 1.8ltr engine pushes the light car along from 0 - 60 in a little over 9 seconds. But it is a pleasant drive, comfortable and easy especially with the sequential box. The diesel, which produces 140lb ft of torque, is close behind this giving a little over 10 seconds for this feat.
The crash tests have given the Yaris five-stars, with three-stars for child protection. Security is good and running costs are extremely low with insurance groups between 1 and 4
