The Astra has been around for years and has been a mainstay of the Vauxhall range for almost as long as the Cavalier. With a range of engines from 1.4 to 2ltr there is something for every taste. Vauxhall produces good, strong engines, both petrol and diesel, and all are responsive and free revving, but in the Astra they have their power put to the road through a gearbox that can be a little reluctant. The diesels can also be a little noisy. Large amounts of electronic gadgetry can cause the Astra's steering to feel a little removed from the road, but the driving position and controls are good, so all in all it is a pleasant experience.

Space isn't overly generous, but there is room for four adults and a reasonable amount of luggage. One little gripe could come from the large rear light clusters, which make the entrance to the boot a little narrow.

Not the most economical in its range, but not unreasonable with any of the engine packages. A negative issue is the less than average residual values.
