Vauxhall have done a lot to give the Corsa an impression of quality. Build is good, with impressive materials and colour range. The chassis comes from a Fiat Punto, which Vauxhall have retuned to give a good comfortable ride. A firmer version available on the SXi can be a little too firm for some tastes.

Again, a good range of engines is available, although the smallest petrol versions, the 1.0 and 1.2ltr have to work a little too hard for anyone doing a lot of high-speed distance mileage. Despite this, engine, road and wind noise have been kept to an absolute minimum on all but the 1.7 diesels. Economically, the Corsa is a mixed bundle. The petrol-engined versions return good consumptions, but suffer from lack of power. There is also Vauxhall's below average residual values to consider.

Space is good for a small car, with the 5-door able to carry 5 adults. Adjustable height driver's seat and adjustable steering column are only available on the higher-specification models.

Insurance groups range from 2 to 6, with the SRi coming in at a mighty 10 because of it excellent performance. This is partly because of the high standard of equipment the Corsa has to help drivers avoid accidents and, in the unfortunate event of an accident, to warn others of the fact
