The Bora brings style to the small family saloon. And it is the German's, and particularly Volkswagen's, attention to detail that makes this a good car. It attempts to compete with the 3-Series BMW, so engines are all important. Even the basic 1.6 petrol is reasonable with mid-range pull, while the 1.8, 2.0ltr, 2.4 V5 and the 2.8 V6 are excellent. The two turbodiesels are also decently competitive.
Built on the Golf basics, the Bora is a little stiffer and on winding roads and motorways is a good drive, but the ride is underdampered so can be a little undulating on bumpy roads.
The interior is refined and the use of good materials makes it look a class above the rest. Driving position is good and the controls have been well thought out and developed. The gear change can be a touch clunky and the V5 engine is less smooth than you would expect.
Safety and security are good and that is conveyed to the driver as they sit behind the wheel. It feels safe, as does the donor Golf. However, if the rear passengers are adults, they will notice a certain tightness around knees and head. The level of equipment is high on all models.
As small family saloons are not that popular, the Bora can be picked up quite cheaply and is relatively cheap to run. Insurance groups range from 5 to 17.
