Volkswagen have been producing a van-based passenger vehicle for as long as Volkwagen have been producing...everyone remembers the Camper Van and Transporter. The latest version, the Caravelle, is a people carrier in the luxury class. A full seven-seater, it is larger than most of its competition, but despite this handles well.
There are three diesel power units, a 1.9 producing 103bhp and two 2.5-litre units developing 128bhp or 172bhp respectively. There is also 3.2 V6 petrol lump producing 233bhp. All cope well, but the high kerb weight does mean the higher power units cope better.
There is little roll around corners, keeping rear passengers comfortable and the steering is stiff and precise providing a sense of good control. The firm suspension makes smooth motorways a dream, but may make bumpy side roads seem a little rough.
In the rear, all seats are individual and can be moved, taken out or folded as necessary to produce a highly flexible layout.
The driver can adjust their environment to gain an excellent position. Controls are well laid-out and the dash-mounted gear lever is easily at hand.
All models come well equipped. Insurance is around 13 to 15.
