Volkswagen's large family saloon, the Passat does its job, but doesn't match Ford's Mondeo on an number of fronts. Power is the first of these, with the entry-level 1.6 a trifle inadequate. Also, the 1.9 diesel is sufficiently powerful, but lets you know about it when asked to work a little harder. Top of the range is a 3.2ltr V6, which is impressive with its power of nigh-on 250bhp.
All Passats have a good ride, but the Sport version has a sharper ride for those who like to feel the environment they are driving through. Otherwise, all models match their rivals with low noise levels, but the diesels can be a little more loud than average.
The Passat is more expensive than the others in this market, but residual prices are higher and running costs are about the same.
Full electronic systems support the driver in their efforts to keep the car on the road and going in the direction they desire. Security is good.
Driver's seat and steering wheel adjust sufficiently for anyone to be able to find a comfortable driving position in which to use the precise controls. Despite having a huge cabin, a large transmission tunnel is inconvenient to say the least for the central rear passenger, who will need to sit with legs splayed.
Levels or equipment are unsurprisingly high. Insurance groups range from 7 to 17.
