A car many have completely ignored. The Phaeton is Volkswagen's attempt at the luxury family car market and they have done it with their normal finesse and attention to detail. Unfortunately, the initial cost and disastrous residual value mean that the Phaeton hasn't been taken up quite as much as it might. However, these same factors also mean that the Phaeton is a mega deal on the second hand market.
Designed for the driver, there is an infinitely-adjustable seat and adjustable steering with which to find the perfect driving position. There is also a vast array of buttons and switches - some double up, which can be confusing, especially on the move.
Built as either a four or five seat, the Phaeton is exceptionally roomy, with individual climate controls for front passengers and optionally for rear passengers too.
Power units start with a 3.2 ltr V6 petrol or a 3.0ltr V6 diesel engine and go up to a 6ltr W12, which sits in a long wheelbase version of the car adding 20cm more to the passenger cabin. The larger engines put their power to the road through Volkswagen's 4Motion four-wheel drive system.
Safety and security are typical Volkswagen. Insurance is unsurprisingly high at group 17 to 20.
