Many saw the Polo as a mini Golf when it was first introduced. But it wasn't, the Polo was and still is, a car in its own right and does well against the supermini opposition with a well-earned reputation for reliability and prestige. Certainly, other superminis have more space and better equipment, but the Polo is refined...it is built for comfort, not speed. Unfortunately, this does lead to some swaying around corners and some bouncing over rough terrain, but otherwise the ride is soft and smooth.
Power is average throughout the range, with 1.2 and 1.4ltr petrol engines and a 1.4 and 1.9ltr diesel - oh yes, and the Bluemotion, the most economic car on the road that isn't electric. The 1.2 and the diesels can be a little raucous when worked.
Inside, the Polo can be a little bland, with a few good materials, but otherwise an average display. Safety and Security are also average, with side bags and curtain bags either available on top variants or as an optional extra.
The internal space is adequate for four adults and the boot space is good, if not perfectly shaped.
