Considered against the other German 4X4s the Tourareg is a bargain. Powered by some big engines - one petrol, a 3.6 V6, and 3 diesel, a 2.5, 3.0 and 5ltr V10. The 2.5ltr is not quite up to it considering the size of the beast, so the 3ltr is the best bet. The 5ltr could pull a 40 tonne trailer and not notice, but it costs a fortune to buy and more to run.
The Tourareg shares a chassis with a Porche...the Cayenne! It is designed for on-road use mainly, but certainly has off-road capabilities. The steering and control are exceptionally sharp, but the ride is harsh, especially at slow speeds. Surprisingly, noise levels are low, even with the older 2.5ltr engine, which is a touch heathen.
The Tourareg is a thirsty beast and because of its high emissions would cost a fortune in company car tax.
The car is huge and there is plenty of room for five adults and their luggage. Not only is the cabin spacious, it is classy, although there are some items that aren't befitting a car of this price, such as the air-conditioner controls, which are small and fiddly.
Safety-wise, the Tourareg is as strong as a brick outhouse and in addition comes with all the bits and pieces aimed at making it even safer. It goes without saying that equipment levels are high. Insurance is from 15 to 18.
