The Touran is a compact MPV...a popular size and type of family car. It comes with a choice of two petrol and four turbodiesel engines: 1.6ltr and a 1.4ltr turbocharged and supercharged; two 1.9 ltr and two 2.0ltr. All come with a six speed manual box with the higher powered versions available with Volkswagen semi-automatic box.
As with many of these MPVs, the ride is hard, but this adds to the drivability and prevents roll for passenger comfort. Variable speed power-steering allows for light around-town driving, but leaves the steering weighted and communicative at higher speeds.
Wind and road noise are reasonably subdued, but some of the engines are a tad noisy when revved.
Adjustments in driver's seat and steering column allow for a good driving position, although the front pillars restrict forward view considerably. Controls and instruments are good. Although a seven-seater, the usual problem arises with luggage space when all seven seats are used...there isn't any. The middle row of seats can be folded, moved or removed, the rear-most seats folded flat.
Running costs are low, with the diesels returning 45mpg. Insurance groups range from 6 to 12. The safety and security equipment is good on all models.
