Volvo's base family car, the S40 is not cheap compared with the opposition, but you do get a lot for your money and the quality is above average.
Starting with the power units, the range starts with a 100bhp 1.6ltr petrol engine then leaps to a whopping 2.4ltr petrol and a 220bhp turbocharged 2.5-litre T5. There are also diesel alternatives with a 136bhp 2.0-ltr diesel or a 2.4-ltr turbodiesel.
The ride is firm in true Volvo style, but the steering and suspension are tuned to cope well with twisting roads as well as motorways. Road noise is well suppressed, but the wind intrudes at higher speeds and the diesel engines can be a touch on the loud side.
The driving position is good with supportive seating and a good range of adjustments on the steering wheel. The ultra-thin central consol is attractive, but the LCD readout is difficult to read at times and looks a little dated.
Space is ample in the front, but rear passengers may find themselves tight to the roof. Boot space is also adequate and a little difficult to load.
Volvo prides itself on the safety of its cars and the S40 is no different gaining 5-stars in the crash tests. Equipment levels are good, consumption figures average and insurance in groups 8-16.
