Volvo's executive saloon, the S80 compares well to the German rivals, with a classy interior and a smooth, dynamic shape.
There are two 2.4ltr, five-cylinder turbodiesels available: the 2.4D gives 160bhp and the D5 183bhp. Petrol options include a 2.5-ltr turbo, a 3.2ltr V6 and a 4.4ltr V8. Unsurprisingly, they are all smooth and relaxed when cruising. The automatic gearboxes are a little too eager to kick down.
Suspension is firm, as is the want of Volvo, but it feels in control on winding roads. Pot holes cause a lot of noise. The optional sport set up provides Volvo's Four-C suspension, which automatically adjusts the ride to suit the road surface.
The driving position is good with plenty of adjustments on steering and seats to provide for even the most awkward of body shapes behind the wheel. The interior is good, but doesn't match that of BMW or Audi. Boot space is not great, but the rear seat splits and folds out of the way for extra load space.
Consumption is high, but average for these sized engines. Servicing is good at every 2-years or 18,000 miles. Insurance is groups 13 - 18.
