The V70 has a reputation for being the biggest load carrier and the safest estate around. It isn't. Rivals have matched it and in some cases surpassed it.

However, this doesn't appear to have done anything to detract from the diehard Volvo buyer. There is a huge amount of choice with the V70, with engines, running gear and trim. There is even a 4X4 version.

Engines range in power from the 140bhp 2.4-ltr to the 260bhp 2.3 T5. For everyday use, the 2.0ltr turbo or any of the 2.4ltr models are fine, but the D5 diesel is also a strong contender.

For such a large car, the ride is firm with a new stiffened chassis to assist in handling. Body roll is negligible and grip has been improved enormously.

Although other cars have matched Volvo for safety, it is other manufacturers doing better, not Volvo has slipping back. The V70 has all the features that run across the range including anti-whiplash and side-impact protection systems. Traction control is fitted on most models.

The interior is smart and well put together with some of the best seats in the market. Plenty of space and storage with hooks available in the foot well for the handbag or a curry.
