Most people probably know a self-confessed ‘car lover’ or two.

But Edward Smith, a 57 year old man from Washington state in America, takes this concept to a whole new level.

For Smith’s live-in ‘girlfriend’ is somewhat unorthodox. She - or rather, it - is a Volkswagen Beetle, not entirely dissimilar to the one pictured.

Smith, who claims to be attracted to neither women or men, had his first sexual experience with a car at the age of 15. His predilection for mechanics doesn’t stop at four-wheeled vehicles, either. He’s also enjoyed a steamy session with the helicopter from hit TV series Airwolf.

And he’s far from monogamous – he also indulges in regular romps with a 1973 Opel GT and a 1993 Ford Ranger who goes by the name of Cinnamon, and claims to have made of 1,000 automotive 'conquests'.

The American, who is the subject of a Channel 5 documentary about ‘mechaphilia,’ said: “I'm a romantic. I write poetry about cars, I sing to them and talk to them just like a girlfriend. I know what's in my heart and I have no desire to change. I'm not sick and I don't want to hurt anyone, cars are just my preference.”

Head of business development at, John Miles, said: "Plenty of drivers have a special relationship with their car and we hear plenty about drivers who get frisky behind the wheel, but this takes things to a whole new level. Still, he's not causing anyone any harm, so good luck to him. If you love your car this much, then it makes perfect sense to protect it with a robust car insurance policy. And what better way to shop around for a better deal than with”
